Spring fishing for walleye
on Lake Erie
Lake Erie fishing tactics, patterns and presentation presented by Coe Vanna Charters
April Jig Fishing
on Ohio Reefs Turns Big Numbers and Trophy Walleye!
April Walleye fishing on Lake Erie - Walleye driven by their instinct to spawn - school
heavy on the
reefs in Lake Erie's western basin reef complex near Port
Clinton, OH. every spring.
Jig fishing produces
big numbers and trophy walleye opportunities
are abundant - close to our docks. We supply all the tackle.
Rods and
reels loaded with plenty of jigs in lots of colors - covering all the bases! We
spool our reels with
Berkley Power Pro premium fishing line. You can feel when a walleye sniff's your lure!
Rod in hand drift fishing action turns big numbers of walleye in April.
A crew of six fisherman can easily handle one hundred walleye in a few
hours when conditions are right.
You have your choice you can catch three to
five pound walleye one after the other or pursue the trophy
gators by working
the deep water near the out side reefs.
March starts the annual spawning run in
Lake Erie for walleye. There are several stages to this annual spawning event.
The secret to success is knowing the different stages and where the walleye are
most prone to be schooled the heaviest. Ice out pre spawn walleye will become
very finicky and picky. They still feed but it is usually a better late day
bite. The first runs of males will show in the Sandusky Bay and the mouth of the
Maumee River. These walleye tend to be males in the 3 to 4 lb class with the
females moving up the rivers after dark.
The main schools of Lake Erie walleye are still holding in the deep waters in or
near Ohio's western basin reef complex here are a few things to keep in mind
searching for walleye
in Lake Erie's deep waters early in the spring.
It is not unusual to mark nothing on your graph especially in Lake Erie.
Cold water walleye hold in the mud. Starting in March and through early April
walleye will hold in the deeper water 30 foot or so close to the reefs and
Islands. Fish near structure with deep sharp drop offs. A-B-C-cans- Cone
reef - Niagara and the area between Niagara Reef - Crib and Round reef gives up
a lot of Trophy walleye early in the spring. Other prime areas are Gravel Pits ,
West Reef Kelly's Island Shoal, Gull, Lucy's Point and the area between North
Bass and Middle Bass. Vertical jigging usually works best while anchored up.
Lake Erie's true Trophy Walleye are to be had this time of year and they are
much more prone to schooling in the 30 to 35 feet of water. Swedish pimples -
blade baits- rapallas - fuzzy grubs - jigs - your choice they all work well. I
tip mine with minnows and work them very slow. The evening hours are my favorite
time for vertical fishing ice out walleye on Lake Erie. You will notice that the
areas you have been fishing during the day and marking absolutely nothing
suddenly come to life in the evening as the walleye rise off the bottom - you
start marking them. Deep Cold water walleye become more active in the evenings.
Stage two is when the masses of walleye driven by their urge to spawn swarm the
reefs day and night. During these times fish where the fish should be on top the
reefs early and late and move deeper as the sun rises in the morning. Our guides
mainly drift fish this time of year because there just is so many walleye on or
near the reefs it is hard NOT TO CATCH
LIMITS. This is the only time of
year walleye fishing on Lake Erie that the walleye come to us!
We offer special two day trip prices this time of year
because we are able to pass the fuel
savings on to you - our docks are located close to the reefs.
Pretty simple and basic pay attention to the sun rising fish shallow on the reef
peaks early avoid heavy boat traffic and concentrate on adjusting your fishing a
little deeper and deeper as the sun rises. During the main walleye run on the
reefs which happens every year from the beginning of the second week of April
and holds very strong through the last week of April. It is normal to handle 100
walleye per day in the 3 to five pound class this time of year. How ever if you
are Trophy fishing you should concentrate on the deep waters close to the
outside reefs. You will have to give up on the numbers of walleye but lots of
times the rewards are worth it!
