How To Catch Limits
Lake Erie Yellow Perch
The trick to fishing Lake Erie perch is finding them and what kind of equipment to use. The good news is you don’t need a lot of expensive gear to get started. A basic light rod and reel will do for Lake Erie perching. Lake Erie perch fishing charters use light tackle – especially if jig fishing (moving the rod up and down or sideways to move the spreader or perch rig). Ultra-light open or closed spinning reels are popular for perch fishing on Lake Erie. Light braided line (8 to 10-pound test) is recommended. Lake Erie Perch are not picky eaters, especially when they’re in a feeding frenzy.
Perch Fishing Tip – Return Bait Quickly
I use minnows exclusively while perch fishing on Lake Erie because I know they work.
Now here’s a great tip. When I catch my first perch, I always try to get another bait down as quickly as possible because the perch are looking for activity and other bait. Many times jumbo yellow perch will be moving in groups, foraging for food, and if they spot some activity and bait in the area others will likely remain, keeping you busy hauling them up one after another. Always “Quick Bait Returns” The perch you are bringing up spit the bait out on the way up and this in turns chums in more perch resulting in a feeding frenzy as long as you keep the bait flowing in the water.
