Population & Hatch Trends
- Total Population: The current estimate of 180 million fish in 2025 marks a significant increase from the 2023 estimate of roughly 89 million adult fish.
- 2025 Hatch Success: The 2025 western basin hatch index was 128 fish per hectare, the sixth-largest in 38 years and more than double the long-term average of 57.
- Central Basin Growth: Production in the central basin remains strong, with a 2025 index of 26 young-of-year per hectare, ranking fourth-best in history.
- Historical Context: After a below-average hatch in 2024 (19 fish per hectare), the 2025 boom ensures a steady supply of new fish that will reach legal harvest size (15 inches) by spring 2027.
Walleye numbers on Lake Erie
Lake Erie walleye
Walleye numbers are estimated 180 million. 2,3,4,5 and 8 year old walleye will be prevailing 20 to 26 inch 2,3 to 6 and 7 lbs. Not to mention average and above average hatches in between the exceptional. Lake Erie will have world class walleye fishing for years to come. Perch fishing in the western basin was good in 2025 and along with another average perch hatch we expect this coming perch season to be as good.
