The Fall Walleye Bite Is ON!!
Walleye are firing up with some limits being taken casting weapons, Parish Peas and Tiny Teasers on shallow structure. Nice mix of walleye ranging from 16 to 24 inches with a occasional big head. Best depths are from 4 to 16 feet. Shallow water structure fishing around the Islands, Gull, Kelly’s Shoal is producing new walleye that are migrating to the western basin staging for winter. By new walleye I mean walleye that have just shown up recently. They are not native reef walleye that have the dark look and have been residents on the rocks. To me this is the signal we have been waiting for the fall walleye bite is on and with the numbers of legal size walleye in the lake I am expecting a exceptionally good fall walleye run as always weather cooperating of coarse.
Sept 16 Small mouth Bass Fishing Report
Small mouth Bass are beginning to get active in Lake Erie’s western basin. We are catching some how ever the bite is far from stellar. Twenty bass is a good day right now. Not what we call a good day, turning a 100 with a crew of six fisherman is a good day. Too much fishing pressure because the walleye fishing was not producing enough keepers and clear water are most likely the culprits. We have seen it in the past lack of algae super clear water the bass simply leave to where home is more comfortable. The bass fishing will recover but they take longer to come back. I hope i am wrong but I expect it will be next year. When water conditions are right they slowly collect to good numbers on the reefs and bass fishing is good. How ever that has not been the case this year.
Perch Fishing Report Sept 16
Perch fishing remains very good – out standing – Best in 15 years on the Western Basin of Lake Erie. Taco Bell – D Can – Niagara – East of the Perrys Monument – Lucy’s Point and around Kelly’s. The weather buoy by the shipping channel, The Gravel Pits North of West Sister. Perch fishing action pretty much over all remains excellent. When you get them started keep the bait in the water – get your hook baited and back to the bottom ASAP – it chums the surrounding water starting a feeding frenzy under your boat and catching is as fast as you hit the bottom and you limit out fast.
Sept 4 2016
Walleye and Small mouth Bass are showing signs of beginning to get active in Lake Erie’s western basin. Spotty Reports are starting to come in drift fishing for walleye rock picking around the Islands on both the U.S. and Canadian waters. Cedar Point – Sawmill and Ruggles. Best depths are 6 to 15 feet. They are starting to bite which means just that there is by no means a burn going on. There are occasional catches ranging from 12 to 20 some walleye. Mixed bags 16 to 24 inches on the average. The water temperature in Lake Erie is still extremely warm 75 degrees as reported by TV 13 our local news station yesterday. How ever with the days growing shorter the water will cool soon to 72 degrees which should get the fall bite started. I am guessing about 2 weeks from now. Looking at the big picture walleye are being reported off Lorain, The weather buoy, Ruggles and Cedar Point. Which means they are not far away. They can easily move 10 miles in a day. So the deep water off shore shallow reef bite as well as the open deep water bite off Huron , Vermilion, Cedar Point can get under way at any time.
Trolling off Cedar Point to Sawmill to Ruggles and up near the weather buoy. Slow trolling crawler harnesses 1. 5 mph 60 back with true trips running the 30 foot shelf break from Cedar Point to Ruggles spotty catches some pretty good but that is the exception right now. The weather buoy deep open water fishing some are using crawler harnesses others spoons.
It is good to hear that the walleye are close Lorain to the Weather buoy – Ruggles and east of Kelly’s. Captains are reporting lots of marks on the graphs. The cooler nights and shorter days will trigger the fall bite soon.
Perch Fishing Report Sept 5 2016
Perch fishing remains very good. Taco Bell – D Can – Niagara – East of the Perrys Monument – Lucy’s Point and around Kelly’s. Perch fishing action pretty much over all remains good. As always if you get them started keep the bait in – it chums the water catching is as fast as you hit the bottom and you limit out fast.
Small mouth Bass Fishing Report US and Canadian waters Sept 5 2016
Small mouth Bass action has been slow on both the US waters and Canadian waters around Pelee including the east side of Pelee. Is the bass action slow because of warm water or clear water or both ? Are they around or did they go where home is more comfy because of the clean water the western basin experienced all year until just recently. The million dollar question for bass fisherman. On a plus we have pulled some bass recently fishing walleye on the rocks with spinners. Which is a good sign. As with the walleye the bass to will become aggressive as the water cools and the days shorten. The fall bite is about two weeks behind.
Sept 1 2016
Yellow Perch fishing is very good! Up and Down two at a time ! Limits of 210 perch for 6 people and the captains are coming in fast. The Western Basin of Lake Erie is loaded with nice size Yellow Perch from the Toledo Intake , A Can, B Can, C Can, D Can, E Can, Niagara, Kidney, The Finger, Doo Dahs, Green and Rattlesnake, Rattlesnake, D can ! Until the lake temperature starts dropping to fire the walleye up – Go catch your limit of perch you will be glad you did when you mount these tasty fish between two pieces of bread !
Finish your day off by catching some walleye to top of the cooler loaded with perch and finish your day.
Walleye Fishing will pick up as the water temperature cools Sept and Oct should produce lots of good eating-16 inch walleye, I do not expect much in the way of Trophy walleye fishing this fall. As always fishing in Lake Erie you have a shot at 30 inch walleye. Cold water big fish. How ever. I simply do not think there are that many older walleye in the lake. Instead we are loaded with two exceptional walleye hatches 2014 and 2015. I will take that! The 2014s are now reaching legal size.
